When passengers hop on a bus, they typically don't have too many expectations but may simply want to get to their destination in relative comfort. For fleet operators, therefore, the objective is quite straightforward. They just need to make sure that the vehicle in question is as well maintained as possible and, crucially, that the suspension delivers a great ride. However, this is not always as simple as it sounds, as buses today are fitted with an unusual suspension system. If you don't know too much about this area, how does this setup work and what could go wrong?
How It All Works
Most modern-day buses are fitted with a compressed airbag system, as it is generally felt that this should provide the most comfortable ride and be the most reliable, given the configuration of the vehicle. These airbags are fitted on top of each axle and require a reliable supply of pressurised air to hold up the weight of the vehicle and counteract the unpredictability of the road surface.
The airbags themselves are relatively strong and will typically cope with the passage of time well, but the system is entirely reliant on a mechanical compressor, and this component will need some additional attention.
Compressor Issues
So long as the airbags are properly inflated, the valves are in good working condition and the seals remain in place, the vehicle will maintain a level position, as it is being driven down the road. However, if the compressor starts to play up, then the bags will fail to inflate properly, the vehicle will sit down and the passengers will certainly feel every bump or indentation. The driver will also notice that there are some strange noises emanating from underneath the seat, as the compressor starts to fail, the bearings give out or the motor begins to seize.
Valves and Seals
Most of the time, the compressor will be the villain whenever an operator encounters a suspension issue. However, the individual valves or seals within each airbag can sometimes play up and in this case, the vehicle may sag to the side. If it does so, urgent action will need to be taken, and the vehicle will not be safe to drive at that time.
Paying Attention
With proper and regular maintenance, suspension issues can generally be avoided. Proper attention should, therefore, be paid to the compressor during each scheduled service to ensure that the vehicle is as safe and as comfortable as possible.
