Snow Chains
You may not yet be aware, but local regulations are in place that require a two-wheel drive car or truck to be fitted with tyre chains when driving in certain areas. You should become familiar with these devices, learn how to fit them if needed and remember to carry them in your vehicle if you venture into these areas when snow is present.
Winter Tyres
Other than that, it is a good idea to choose tyres that have been specifically designed for winter driving and fit them for those specific months. These tyres can help you cope with wet and slippery conditions even if there is no snow and will provide you with much better grip than covers that are designed specifically for the summer.
Wider Is Better
Some people think that you should fit "skinny" tyres for winter driving, as they have seen these in action in some Scandinavian countries. This is not a good idea in Australia, however, as those tyres are designed to cope with heavy snow on an almost continuous basis. You will be much better off choosing the traditional and wider winter tyre in Australia, as it will help you to deal with any standing water or the potential for an aquaplane, which is to be avoided at all costs. If you do encounter some snow, they will still give you superior traction, but they will also be perfectly fit for use on damp roads in cooler conditions.
Being Prepared
As you live in a state with an unpredictable climate, it's a good idea to change your tyres midway through the year. As such, you should get used to driving on a different set of tyres depending on the calendar and should talk with your tyres shop to choose the right set. Remember, you can never be too safe as you get behind the wheel in those tricky conditions.
