For an internal combustion engine to work properly, many of the individual parts need to be carefully orchestrated so that they do their job with perfect timing. For example, an inlet valve has to open a split-second before the piston moves towards the top of its cylinder, so the combustible mixture can be introduced and subsequently detonated. All of this complexity is managed by a timing belt or chain and this is, consequently, one of the most crucial components in the entire vehicle. You will need to keep a close eye on this -- especially if it is a belt rather than a chain -- or major damage could ensue. What do you need to know?
Timing Belt in Action
While some modern-day cars are fitted with a metal chain rather than a belt, older vehicles typically have a solution that is made from rubber with traces of fibreglass. This is quite a hardy component, but it is not as strong as a metal chain and, given time, it will wear down.
The timing belt, in essence, connects the crankshaft and the camshaft and provides the means to open and shut those valves. Technicians adjust its setting so that all of those components open at precisely the right time and the engine is able to perform as designed.
Danger Awaits
If the timing belt begins to wear down, it may start to fray around the edges and this situation will get gradually worse. Eventually, it could snap altogether, and this could lead to significant damage in some circumstances.
For example, if the engine was under heavy load at the time and it was designed in a certain way (aka an interference engine) then the valves could be bent, the camshaft could be damaged and the cylinder itself would be compromised. As you can imagine, the repair bill would be significant.
What to Do
It is best if you take your vehicle in to a mechanic for regular servicing and they will be able to take a look at the condition of the timing belt when you do. In the meantime, if you feel that the belt needs to be replaced, then this is quite a challenging job and it does require specialist tools and know-how. To give you an indication, you may need a multi-pronged pulley puller, together with a torque wrench and various specialty sockets. When you add some specific knowledge and a great deal of patience, it is far better to schedule a visit to your technician instead.
