Service and Maintenance Tips to Optimise the Performance of Your Car AC

A car's air conditioner is an important system that improves the comfort levels in the cabin during the hot season. Thus, just like other systems, the AC requires regular servicing and maintenance to maintain optimal performance. Failure to do this leads to frequent inconveniences. Some parts of the AC, such as the compressor, can cost you a lot of money if they break down. Thus, to optimise performance and extend the AC lifespan, here are some service and maintenance steps to execute.

Clean and change the air filter

Also known as the cabin filter, the AC filter traps dirt and contaminants in the air before it's released into the cabin. This helps ensure a constant flow of clean air inside your vehicle. Over time, the filter clogs up with dust, dirt, pollen, and other contaminants. When this happens, you may experience:

  • Restricted airflow, even when you have cranked up the AC
  • Deterioration of the air quality in your cabin
  • Reduction of engine power when the AC is on

Clean your air filter regularly, especially if you drive around dusty roads or neighbourhoods. If you notice a lot of dust and pollen in your vehicle, the filter may be letting contaminants through, and you will need to replace it.

Regas the air conditioner

A car AC uses refrigerant to draw heat from the cabin air. Low Freon levels reduce the system's ability to cool your car. If the AC blows warm air or cools inefficiently, check the refrigerant levels. You can also look around the cabin for signs of refrigerant leaks. Regas the AC as soon as you locate the leak. If left unchecked, low refrigerant can cause damage to the compressor due to low fluid pressure. Subsequently, low Freon pressure can also prevent the clutch from engaging properly.

Inspect the compressor regularly

The AC air compressor is the heart of your car's air conditioning system. It pressurises the refrigerant and sends it to the condenser for heat dissipation. Thus, a faulty compressor can shut down the entire AC system. Furthermore, the compressor is operated by the engine drive belt; therefore, a faulty compressor can put pressure on the engine components. If the compressor seizes, it can cause the belt to lock up other engine components, leading to significant damage.

Run AC during the winter

If you're not using your vehicle during the winter, make a point of running the AC at least once every week. This simple task keeps the refrigerant in optimal pressure and avoids performance problems during the summer. It also heats the compressor and condenser and protects them from freezing in the cold weather.

Service your auto AC regularly to optimise its performance. Visit a car service shop for professional AC tuneups and maintenance.
