Don't Ignore These Clear Signs of Automatic Transmission Trouble

Although your car's engine is designed to run in a relatively narrow band of speeds, the wheels rotate over a broader range of output speeds. This is where automatic transmissions come in.

An automatic transmission is the vehicle component that's responsible for converting the power of the engine into the torque (rotational force) required to move the vehicle. Since the transmission is critical to the performance and efficiency of the engine and entire vehicle, transmission problems rarely go unnoticed.

Watch out for these signs of transmission trouble so you can know when to undertake transmission repairs on your car.

1. Transmission light comes on

If you drive a modern car, the vehicle has a transmission warning light on its dashboard. The purpose of the transmission dashboard warning light is to let you know when there's an issue with your transmission system. The most likely culprits are low fluid level, contaminated fluid and fluid that's hotter than usual.

Never ignore your transmission warning light because it indicates that you could be facing all sorts of transmission problems that can cause major or even permanent damage to the transmission.

2. Burning smell

When it's in good condition, your automatic transmission fluid smells slightly sweet. If you notice a burnt smell from the transmission while the vehicle runs, this shows that the transmission is running too hot.

An overheating transmission increases the rate of wear and tear on transmission components, as well as increases corrosion activity in the engine. It should be repaired immediately to avert a potential breakdown of the transmission.

3. Slipping transmission

When it is functioning properly, your automatic transmission allows your car to change gears smoothly and quickly. If your engine is revving, but the vehicle doesn't accelerate, this means that the power of the engine isn't being transferred to the wheels. This problem is referred to as transmission slipping and it can be especially dangerous during overtaking on the highway.

If your transmission is slipping, you should get the problem fixed right away to avoid vehicle safety risks.

Given the crucial function that your automatic transmission serves in your car, you shouldn't overlook even the slightest problem with it. If you need professional transmission repairs for your car, don't hesitate to visit the experts at an auto repair shop located in your area. They'll thoroughly check your transmission to identify problems and recommend the best ways to fix them.
