Are Your Caravan Wheel Bearings Ready for Your Next Adventure?

If you own a caravan that you may use for family holidays, you may keep it parked up over the off-season. However, when you're ready to set off on another trip, you want to make sure that it is in the best condition and may need to service certain parts. One of the most important areas to check is the axle and, specifically, the wheel bearings. So what should you look out for here as you prepare for your next adventure?

How Wheel Bearings Should Work

Wheel bearings allow each wheel to revolve while the rest of the axle remains in place. They are simple devices, but they need to put up with a tremendous amount of wear and tear. Occasionally, a wheel bearing can work loose or become worn or damaged. Unfortunately, when this happens, you may not be aware of the problem until the wheel falls off entirely, which is clearly something that you want to avoid.

So, your first step should be to jack up the caravan and ensure it is sitting safely on jack stands.

Test Performance

Next, grasp each wheel by holding it at the 10 and 2 o'clock positions and try to move it inward and outward. They will probably be a small amount of play, but if such movement is noticeable, you may have issues with the bearing.

Next, spin the wheel and look at the performance. If you notice a wobble rather than a smooth rotation, the bearings may need to be replaced or serviced.

Check for Excess Heat

For the next test, you will need to return the caravan to ground level and take it out for a short journey. After a few kilometres, park in a safe place and go back to the caravan. Put your hand on the end of the wheel hub to check the temperature. If it is far too hot for you to hold your hand in place, the bearing is no longer serviceable and will undoubtedly have to be replaced.

What About Adding Grease?

Some caravan designs allow you to add grease to each bearing through a specific opening known as a "zerk." However, most do not have this option, and if the bearing no longer has enough grease to deal with high friction levels, it will need to be replaced.

Did Expert Attention

So, before you embark on any lengthy journey, take your vehicle to a caravan repair mechanic for their attention. They will not only deal with those faulty bearings but check the brakes, electrics and other parts too.
